KidsCan
KidsCan a New Zealand focused, registered charity, is dedicated
to meeting the basic physical needs of financially disadvantaged
children, leveling the playing field so they have the chance to
reach their full potential at school and in life.
By raising awareness and looking after children we can help them to
become successful happy adults.
The specific aims of the KidsCan Charitable Trust are...
- To meet the basic physical needs of financially disadvantaged
New Zealand children
- To address the nutritional needs of financially disadvantaged
New Zealand children
Our Children are at Risk!
KidsCan research shows thousands of Kiwi kids have no access or
limited access to the things we take for granted such as clothing
to keep them warm and dry in winter and enough food to ensure they
don't go hungry.
These are the children who go to school cold and wet in winter
because their families simply cannot afford a raincoat and this has
a significant impact on their learning ability. Children who are
consistently hungry suffer from nutritional deficiencies - even
mild malnutrition impairs brain function, stunts growth, increases
chronic illness and the propensity for violence and aggressive
behavior.
KidsCan believes every child has the right to a bright future
and they are committed to addressing these important issues and
improving the lives of children who would otherwise be
overlooked.
Achievements
Since KidsCan started in August 2005 over 20,000 children
attending 91 low decile schools from Kaitaia to Invercargill have
received support through their three programmes. There are still
over 18,000 children on the waiting lists to receive support
To date 24,000 adidas All Black raincoats have been distributed
to children around New Zealand, the 'Food for Kids' programme
currently feeds 7,000 children a week (that's 240,000 meals a
year!), and over 4,000 pairs of shoes and 8,000 pairs of socks have
gone out to our partner schools.
